End of Service Announcement for The 3% Challenge

Thank you, Candidate.

You’ve been a great help to us all. You’ve gone above and beyond all expectations and overcame every challenge. You’ve been with us through thick and thin; you’ve competed in the global competition, shuffled through the maze's unruly waters, freed yourself from the cell, and went through the Winter Challenge. You’ve played every ending. You’re still in the top 3%.

You have ultimately earned your place in the Offshore; therefore, the “Process” is no longer necessary.

Therefore, we’re discontinuing The 3% Challenge on August 12th, 2022.

As thanks for sticking with the game, we’re offering you every chapter of the game for free until Aug 12, 2022 so you can enjoy it until that date. It will not be possible to purchase any chapter as of today.

On October 8th, 2019, we launched the game with the help of talented people. Thank you, Netflix and Rio Games, for your work and dedication to the project, and thank you to everyone on The 3% Challenge team. We’d also like to thank the Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa teams and our supporters and investors for helping make this happen.

While this is the final stretch for this game, we’re building new and interesting things that we hope will excite you just as much.

Once again: Thank you, Candidate.

Obrigado, Candidato.

End of Service Announcement for Voice Quest

Dear Magicians,

You completed the Quest with imagination and flair. You’ve successfully saved King Arthur and grew up to be Merlin’s most likely successor.

Naturally, all adventures have a beginning and an end. Google announced it will shut down its Conversational Actions platform next year, which will preclude the normal functionality of the game.

For this reason we’ve decided to discontinue Voice Quest on August 12, 2022.

Thank you for playing and inspiring us to keep moving forward.

We’d also like to thank Google Assistant’s team for always working closely with us and our marvelous Voice Quest team.

Although this means farewell for now, we will have some cool things coming up in the future. Stay tuned!

Doppio is now part of Fortis!

We’re delighted to announce that Doppio is now part of Fortis!

Throughout our journey at Doppio over the past three-plus years, we have had a blast inventing the next generation of games. It has been our mission to bring gaming to everyone, through voice, live streaming, the web, mobile, and video conferencing platforms, and we’re still extremely excited about doing just that.

So today, we’re thrilled to announce that Doppio is joining the Fortis team. Fortis is an early but mighty organization, with a leadership team of game-industry veterans that aspires to make great games that bring people together, while redefining how game companies work. It was a natural next step for us to join forces given the alignment of our goals: we both are fierce believers in building a sense of belonging through our games and their communities, and in how we operate and treat each other. We’re looking forward to working with some of the industry’s coolest people, who have also designed and launched some of the best games in the world!

In the meantime, don’t worry - for now, all the games you know and love are staying live and being updated as needed. More news as it develops!

To all our investors, friends, and family who have supported us on this path, we can’t thank you enough. We’re looking forward to the future, and we can’t wait to share our next games with you.

Thanks/Obrigado!

Five radical innovations voice brings to gaming

Five radical innovations voice brings to gaming

I joined Doppio a year ago as a Product Manager because I shared the company’s vision that voice technology, and more broadly Natural Language Processing, would enable developers to create radically new games - games that have never been made before. Here are five ways in which voice-first games are unique in the gaming landscape.

Doppio at Alexa Live 2020

Amazon announced a slew of new and exciting features for the Alexa platform yesterday as part of Alexa Live, an all-online streaming developer conference. At Doppio, we’re really bullish about the future of the Alexa platform for games, and so we were thrilled to be a part of several of the event’s announcements.

Here’s a quick roundup on all things Doppio from the Alexa Live program!

The Web API for Games lets us take our games to the next level

The Web API for Games is an exciting leap forward for our ability to deliver voice-forward games that also have great visual experiences. It enables developers like us to build rich animations on the back of web-standard technologies; to provide more a more dynamic audio experience with background tracks, loops and effects; and to take greater control of the player’s experience by controlling how and when the device prompts for voice input.

Back in April, we updated The 3% Challenge with a refreshed visual experience built on top of this exciting new technology, and we think it was a great improvement. You can try it out now on any Echo Show or Fire TV Cube device.

However, that’s not the most exciting thing we’re doing with the Web API for Games…

We’re bringing PAC-MAN to Alexa!

Yeah, you heard that right! As Jeferson announced during the conference, we’re working on a new game that will bring a voice-controlled PAC-MAN experience to your Alexa devices

We’re really excited about this new game and we can’t wait to share more about it with you soon. To be the first to hear more, you can sign up for our newsletter – you definitely won’t want to miss out on this one!

Using APL-A to upgrade the audio experience on The Vortex

APL-A is an exciting new platform feature that allows developers to do more advanced audio mixing in our skills’ audio experiences. All of this happens at runtime, meaning we don’t need to spend a lot of time in development tweaking every audio clip by hand. And, it’s done in a simple and straightforward way that doesn’t slow down the player’s experience with our games.

João Costa, our Sound Designer, spoke about our experience converting The Vortex’s audio content to APL-A. You can also try it out for yourself in the game right now!

Quick Links allow you to launch directly into our games from a link

The new Quick Links feature provides a way for you to launch directly into our games from a link on the web. As our Marketing Lead Carolina Rocha discussed during the conference, this provides a quick and easy way for you to try out new games on this exciting platform; now, instead of having to remember an invocation phrase, you can just click a link and send the skill directly to the device of your choice.

In fact, you may have already seen these links throughout this post! But if not, here’s one for The 3% Challenge and one for The Vortex – try them out now!

That’s all for now! Stay tuned for more news about all these updates in the coming weeks!

Happy Birthday, Doppio!

Happy Birthday, Doppio!

Two years in, we’ve been fortunate to have some success with our first two titles, The Vortex and The 3% Challenge, both of which approach the challenge of designing fun and engaging voice games from slightly different angles.

I wouldn’t say, however, that we’ve found the “perfect formula” for success here yet. We believe that just falling into complacency with existing design patterns and limiting oneself to just building more of the same sort of games that already exist would be a terrible mistake to make in this space right now.

The Doppio WFH Experience

With the outbreak of Covid-19, people across the globe have suddenly been faced with the prospect of working from home full-time. Our team at Doppio is no exception, and we were quick to mobilize.

Here’s a look at how a few of our colleagues have adapted their home work environments to help tackle the challenges – and opportunities – of the WFH lifestyle.

Puppy Love

Carolina Rocha, Marketing

Working from home is far from being a new experience for me. A former freelancer, I’ve always been a fan of flex work, so when we were told to stay home, that was fairly easy. I start my day the way I always do, a quick jog with my dog in the morning (although now I do two laps around my building instead of going the long way around the block) and a good breakfast that I used to skip because I needed the time to commute. I am also working on my post-grad and I host a podcast show, and everything is done remotely – it’s exciting, while still being in the comfort of my home.

While the world is figuring out its new normal, I feel like this team is very nimble and our work pace is as fast as you’d expect from a startup. The company offers smart speaker devices as a welcome gift to everyone and it came in very handy! Slack has become a daily important part of work and just general chatting that keeps the team spirit going. A trick that helps is logging into virtual conference rooms a bit early to slip in some minutes of water cooler conversation before meetings start, just like we used to do in person. It certainly doesn’t beat the cookies I used to buy and share with the team, but I let my puppy sneak in for a peek on video calls to make up for the lack of sugar.

The Importance of Chairs!

Gabriel Canavarro, Design/Development

Being isolated and working from home meant a pretty big twist in my routine! All of a sudden I stopped meeting personally with my team, the 4km walk to get to the office was replaced by a 4 second transition from my bed to my workstation, and I also had to get used to working with my furniture at home instead of what we were used to having in the office , which has been crucial for me.

No matter what I’m doing, if I’m doing it for hours straight everyday, I’m going to need to be comfortable doing it. When we changed to a home-office setup, I was super quick to buy one adjustable gaming chair to achieve the comfort standards I’m searching for. I have been using it for one week so far and it was definitely worth it, it is super comfortable.

Even if it is still unclear how long this pandemic will keep on restricting us from going out, I now feel a lot more confident that if I need to keep working from home for months, I’m already prepared for it!

From home office to home chef

Eva Vital, Design/Development

Working from home hasn’t changed the working day all that much for me, except that I now have traded the time I used to spend commuting on cooking instead! I’ve been making everything from beef-and-veggie fried chow mein, to warm and cold salads, and also a bit of a dip into Italian food with pasta carbonara – yum!

I still wake up about the same time as before, eat breakfast and get dressed as I would if I were going to the office – that means I still put on my bra 😃 – to keep the routine and my working mindset.

While I kind of miss our lunch-time Bang! sessions and coffee breaks, it feels almost as if I were still in the office. We still have the same number of chats, except face-to-face time is now through a screen.

GonçaloArt

Everything Needs a Paint Job

Gonçalo Costa, Art

I’ve worked as a freelancer before, so this is nothing new. While that experience taught me that I function better working with a team around me, I can hardly complain! I think we are some of the few lucky ones that have the possibility of working from home and I’m very grateful for that.

I set up my workspace as far away as possible from my room and I’m keeping the same routine. The alarm clock didn’t change and because I’m saving on my commute time, I start every day one hour earlier. I sometimes consider leaving the house, walking around the block and coming back inside just to tell my brain that I’m “going to work”, but that accomplished feeling of my extra productivity is addicting.

What do I do with all the extra free time? Painting miniatures!

“But Gonçalo, don’t you already spend your day painting? Wouldn’t you rather do something else in your spare time?”

Yeah, I don’t get it either.

Happy in Dexter’s Lab

João Costa, Sound

Before working at Doppio, I worked freelance at home for about two and a half years. So I'm pretty used to this whole WFH situation.

Although with some differences now: having to keep a schedule with regular meetings throughout the day helps with time management and keeps me feeling like I'm still going to work like before. Video conferences (which is something I didn't do a lot as a freelancer) are also super important. They help you keep connected to your colleagues and are a nice change of pace from working alone all day.

Apart from that my routine hasn't changed that much. I do have more time to pet and play with my cat Dexter, so even though I miss the old ways, I'm in no hurry to go back!

JulesPingPongProduct

Ready for Toky—Doppio 2020

Jules Baculard, Product

For the past two weeks I've been working from France, as my family lives in the Paris suburban area. My working routine is now pretty established: I do exercise/Yoga every morning, before making sure I'm online for the daily standup meeting we have early in the afternoon. We're iterating at a fast pace, so there's always a new feature to check out whenever I play our games in the morning. I’m lucky to have a garden at home, so I play table tennis with my family over lunch to make sure I don’t sit around all day! Early in the afternoon I usually sync up with teammates to make sure we’re on the same page; information gaps and miscommunication can happen very quickly on a remote team but we’ve managed to work around them!

Late afternoon and evening is usually when I do deep work: feature design, revenue models… The remote work experience is really something you have to practice and learn before you can be productive at it, but overall I’m enjoying it!

The 3% Challenge is Now Available!

We’re thrilled to announce The 3% Challenge, our second title! We worked hard on this to bring something new to the space. The 3% Challenge has both a multiplayer mode with a weekly competition and an interactive story (a prequel to the Netflix Original Series 3%). The first three chapters of the story are now available for Amazon Alexa, and will be available soon on the Google Assistant!

The game is set in the world of Netflix’s “3%,” a dystopian future where residents of the impoverished Inland, after turning 20 years old, are made to participate in an experiment called The Process. “The Process” is a series of unusual challenges that were set up so only the most worthy would have the opportunity to leave the slums of the The Inland and go to the Offshore— a paradise. Can you beat the competition and make it to the 3%?

The game is available on devices that run Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant. These devices include Android, iOS, and Fire OS mobile devices, Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, Google Home, Google Nest Hub, and many more. For a full list of supported devices and help with opening the game, please see the FAQ. This game is also our first bilingual release – it will be available in both English and in the series’ native Brazilian Portuguese.

Our goal is to expand and improve the game over time, so make sure to send us your feedback! And if you enjoy the game, please leave us a review on the store and spread the word to your friends!

Doppio closes seed funding round

Yesterday, we announced the completion of our first funding round. We’ve raised €1 million from a group of investors that includes the Amazon Alexa Fund and the Google Assistant Investment Program, as well as leading gaming and tech investors Sisu Game Ventures, Andy Chung and Philipp Moehring from AngelList and BreakawayGrowth Fund, alongside Portuguese investors Portugal Ventures and Busy Angels. The round also included several leading angel investors in the gaming industry, such as Lasse Seppänen (Supercell), Alexis Bonte (Stillfront & Atomico) and David Helgason (Unity).

We are tremendously grateful to this group of investors for the confidence they’ve shown in us. We strongly believe that voice-first games have the potential to bring exciting and compelling entertainment experiences to whole new audiences, and this investment will help us continue to do that.

In fact, we’re already putting some of that money to work on a brand new game, which we talked about a bit on stage at the VOICE Summit in Newark, New Jersey yesterday. We’ll have a lot more details to share on that soon, so stay tuned!

And if you are interested in joining the revolution, please get in touch!

In the meantime, here are a few of the articles in the media yesterday covering our funding round:

And here are a few from our own back yard, em Português:
